Dishwasher Not Drying in Humid Weather — Causes & Fixes

Appliance Doctor Team
RINSE

If your dishes have been coming out wetter than usual lately, you’re not imagining it — Central Florida’s summer humidity makes drying harder, and it exposes dishwashers that were already drying poorly. Here’s what’s going on and what actually helps.

1. Empty rinse-aid dispenser

Rinse aid isn’t optional for good drying — it breaks the surface tension so water sheets off instead of beading and clinging. Most dishwashers dry worse without it, and in humid air the difference is dramatic. Refill the dispenser and set it to a higher level.

2. How modern dishwashers dry

Many newer, efficient dishwashers use condensation drying rather than a hot heating element — they rely on cool tub walls to pull moisture off the dishes. That works far less well when the surrounding air is warm and saturated. Plastic items, which don’t hold heat, stay wettest. This is normal behavior, not a breakdown — but rinse aid and loading make a big difference.

3. Loading that traps water

Cups and bowls sitting flat collect a puddle; items nested together shield each other from airflow. Angle everything so water runs off, and keep plastics on the top rack away from pooling.

4. Open the door at the end

The simplest summer fix: crack the door open when the cycle finishes so the humid air inside can escape and the dishes air-dry. Even 10–15 minutes helps.

5. A real heat problem

If your dishwasher does have a heated dry element and dishes are suddenly soaking — and the water also seems less than hot — the heating element or thermostat may have failed. That’s worth a technician’s look, and it often shows up as poor cleaning too.

When to call a technician

If rinse aid, loading, and cracking the door don’t help — or the water isn’t getting hot and cleaning has slipped — the heating element, vent, or control may need service. We repair all major dishwasher brands with same-day appointments across Palm Coast, Daytona Beach, New Smyrna Beach and the surrounding area. See our dishwasher repair service or call (386) 308-2564.
