Freezer Not Keeping Up in Summer Heat — Causes & Fixes

Appliance Doctor Team

A freezer that held rock-solid all winter can start losing the battle when Central Florida heat and humidity peak. If the ice cream is soft, frost is building up, or the freezer just isn’t as cold as it should be, here’s what we check most often once summer arrives.

1. Blocked airflow inside the freezer

Modern freezers cool by circulating air over an evaporator. Overpacking the freezer — or letting a bag block the vents — stops that circulation and creates warm spots. Clear the vents and leave space for air to move.

2. A door that isn’t sealing

Summer humidity makes a weak door seal much worse. Warm, moist air sneaking in turns to frost and forces the unit to run constantly. Check the gasket for tears or hardening, and make sure nothing (a stray bag, an overfilled drawer) is holding the door ajar.

3. Dirty condenser coils

Same culprit as with the fridge: coils clogged with dust can’t release heat, so the whole system loses capacity right when it’s working hardest. Cleaning them often restores freezer performance in one step.

4. Frost buildup / defrost problem

If frost is caking the back wall or vents, the automatic defrost system may be failing (defrost heater, thermostat, or timer/control). Ice blocks airflow and the freezer warms up. This one usually needs a technician to pinpoint which defrost component failed.

5. Refrigerant or compressor issue

If the coils are clean, the door seals, and there’s no frost — but the freezer still won’t reach temperature and the unit runs nonstop — the sealed system (refrigerant charge or compressor) may be the problem. That’s a professional-only diagnosis.

When to call a technician

If a quick airflow-and-seal check doesn’t restore the freezer within a day — or you see heavy frost or nonstop running — call before you lose a freezer full of food. Summer is the hardest season on refrigeration, and small faults get worse fast in the heat.

We repair all major freezer and refrigerator brands with same-day appointments across Palm Coast, Daytona Beach, New Smyrna Beach and the surrounding area. See our refrigerator repair service or call (386) 308-2564.
