By late April in Central Florida, the heat and humidity are already climbing — and your refrigerator feels it. A fridge that coasted through winter can start struggling once the kitchen runs warmer and the compressor works longer to hold temperature. A little prep now prevents a warm-fridge emergency in July.
1. Clean the condenser coils
Dusty coils are the number-one summer efficiency killer. When the coils (behind or beneath the unit) are packed with dust and pet hair, the fridge can’t shed heat and the compressor runs hot and long. 2. Check the door gaskets
Warm, humid air leaking past a worn door seal makes the fridge run constantly and invites condensation. Close the door on a dollar bill — if it slides out easily, the gasket isn’t sealing. Clean the gaskets and replace them if they’re cracked or hardened.
3. Mind the placement and airflow
Summer is when a fridge crammed against a wall or beside the oven really suffers. Leave a couple of inches of clearance on the sides and back so heat can escape. If your second refrigerator lives in the garage, remember that Florida garages can hit 100°F+ — many fridges aren’t rated for that and will struggle.
4. Don’t overfill (but don’t run it empty)
A reasonably full fridge holds cold better, but packing it wall-to-wall blocks the internal airflow that keeps everything evenly cold. Leave room around the vents inside the fresh-food and freezer compartments.
5. Set the right temperature
Aim for 37°F in the refrigerator and 0°F in the freezer. In peak summer it’s tempting to crank it colder, but that just overworks the compressor — the right setpoint plus clean coils does more than a colder dial.
When to call a technician
If the fridge is running nonstop, the fresh-food side is drifting warm, or you hear the compressor short-cycling, get it looked at before the real heat arrives. A small fix in spring is far cheaper than an emergency call — and a lost fridge full of food — in July.
