Finding water pooled in the bottom of a Thermador dishwasher after a cycle is one of the more common calls we get on high-end units — and one of the most methodical to diagnose. Thermador’s quiet, efficient drain system has a few specific failure points. Here’s how we work through them, in order.
1. Clogged filter assembly
Start here. Thermador uses a fine multi-stage filter at the base of the tub. In our hard-water region it packs with food debris, grease, and mineral scale. A blocked filter chokes the drain flow and leaves standing water. Twist it out, rinse it under hot water, and clear the sump area beneath it.
2. Drain hose kink or blockage
The drain hose runs from the pump to the disposer or standpipe. A kink behind the unit — often from a recent push-back after cleaning — or a grease clog at the disposer connection will trap water. If you recently had a new disposal installed, confirm the knockout plug was removed; that single missed step causes many “won’t drain” calls.
3. Drain pump fault or obstruction
If the filter and hose are clear, listen during the drain portion of the cycle. A humming pump with no water movement suggests a jammed impeller (glass chips or a fruit pit are common) or a failed pump motor. A silent pump points to an electrical or control fault.
4. Air gap or high loop
If your sink has an air gap fitting, it can clog and back water up into the dishwasher. Where there’s no air gap, the drain hose needs a proper high loop under the counter — without it, water siphons back. This is a frequent cause after a plumbing or cabinet change.
5. Check-valve or control issue
Thermador’s drain path includes a check valve that stops backflow; if it sticks, draining suffers. And rarely, the control board doesn’t command the drain at all — which reads identically to a pump failure and needs a technician to tell them apart.
