Summer in Central Florida means beach towels, pool clothes, sandy shorts and a lot more sweaty laundry — heavier, wetter, grittier loads than any other season. That extra strain is why washers often act up in summer. A few habits keep yours running smoothly through it.
1. Don’t overstuff — even when the pile is huge
It’s tempting to cram a week of beach towels into one load, but an overloaded washer can’t balance or clean properly. It’s the fastest way to trigger a banging, walking machine mid-spin. Split big loads; towels especially need room to move. See how to level your washing machine properly if yours already shakes.
2. Shake out sand before it goes in
Sand is hard on a washer — it settles into the pump, seals, and drain path. Shake towels and swimwear out outdoors first. A little prevention here avoids a sand-clogged drain pump later.
3. Balance the load
Wet towels are heavy and clump to one side, throwing off the spin. Distribute items evenly around the drum, and mix a few smaller items in with the big ones so the load can balance.
4. Fight summer mildew
Damp swimwear and towels left in the machine, plus summer humidity, breed mildew and that musty smell fast. Move loads to the dryer promptly, and leave a front-loader’s door open between uses so the drum and gasket dry out. If it already smells, see why your washing machine smells bad and how to fix it.
5. Rinse the gasket and clean the filter
On front-loaders, wipe the door gasket where sand and water collect, and clean the drain-pump filter periodically — summer grit fills it faster.
