Summer Vacation Appliance Checklist Before You Travel

Summer travel season means a lot of Central Florida homes sit empty for a week or two — in peak heat and humidity. That’s exactly when a small appliance problem becomes a big mess: a fridge that quits and spoils, a washer hose that lets go, or mold blooming in a sealed-up machine. Ten minutes before you leave saves the homecoming you don’t want.

Refrigerator & freezer

• Clean the coils and check the door seal so the unit isn’t straining in a hot, closed-up house.
• If the freezer is nearly empty, add jugs of water — a full freezer holds cold far longer if the power blips while you’re gone.
• For a long trip, some people empty and unplug the fridge (propping the door open to prevent mold). For a normal week, leaving it running is fine — just make sure it’s healthy first.

Washer

• Turn off the water-supply valves behind the washer. A burst or weeping hose is a leading cause of household floods, and it always seems to happen while no one’s home. This one step prevents the worst-case scenario.
• Run an empty cycle or leave the door/lid open so the drum dries out — a closed, damp front-loader in summer humidity grows mildew fast.

Dishwasher

• Run it empty or make sure it’s not sitting with standing water and food debris that will smell by the time you’re back.

Range & small appliances

• Confirm the oven and range are off (an easy one to double-check).
• Unplug counter appliances and, ideally, big plug-in units — it protects them from the summer lightning surges that strike while you’re away. See our post on surge protection before storm season.

Consider a smart plug or leak sensor

An inexpensive water-leak sensor near the washer or water heater, or a smart plug that alerts you if a fridge loses power, turns a silent disaster into a text message you can act on.
